The Story of Deadwood

At tdg, we love Deadwood history. And we love our Deadwood clients. Our two loves converged recently when we launched a new website for Deadwood History Inc. The new site has one feature I’m personally excited about. The Past Perfect online database is loaded with old photos, historical documents and photos of artifacts, all viewable online.

Deadwood History Inc. operates the Adams Museum, the Adams House, the Days of ‘76 Museum and the Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center. Between them, these institutions a trove of more than 100,000 artifacts, archival materials and photographs. DHI is the go-to resource for historians, academics, researchers and novelists. And now, thanks to the Past Perfect online database, we can all explore Deadwood’s colorful past.

DHI has an extensive collection of historic photos that show life in Deadwood and the Black Hills from the earliest days of the Black Hills Gold Rush. If you have ever seen a photograph of Wild Bill Hickok, there’s a good chance it came from the DHI collection.

Artifacts on the website include old bottles, handguns, drawings, paper money, clothing and just about anything you can imagine. Documents cover a wide variety of topics. You can even find W.E. Adams’ 1934 Elks Club membership card.

Beyond the searchable photo database, the website is colorful, well-organized, and easy to use. Browsing the pages, you get a good idea of all the things that the DHI is doing to preserve and celebrate the city’s history. It’s also functional. You can sign up for a membership, buy photos, find out about upcoming events and find out the hours when you can visit one of the DHI properties.
