Starved Rock State Park in Illinois had a very good year. The park reported record attendance in 2016. The number of visitors, 2.7 million as of Dec. 20, is up 8.5 percent from 2015.
Starved Rock Lodge & Conference Center in the park is a tdg client. The boom could be attributed to good weather, residual interest in parks from the National Park Service Centennial, and the growing popularity of Starved Rock State Park. It was voted the No. 1 attraction in Illinois.
Starved Rock State Park is located halfway between Chicago and the Quad Cities, on the Illinois River. It’s known for its steep sandstone canyons formed by glacial meltwater. Several canyons, including the St. Louis, French and Wildcat canyons, have waterfalls. A wooded trail leads to Lover’s Leap Overlook, with views of the river and Starved Rock Dam. Wildlife includes white-tailed deer, bald eagles and migratory birds.
Starved Rock Lodge, in the center of the park, is a visitor destination in its own right. It has rustic log cabins, an indoor pool, a hot tub and other non-rustic amenities. The Main Dining Room and the Back Door Lounge are popular as well.
Starved Rock Lodge’s meeting and conference facilities are well known throughout the Midwest. In fact, Starved Rock Lodge was voted the Midwest’s top lodge for meetings. In addition, the park and lodge host scores of weddings, both in the outdoor venue and the Great Hall.
